We are in a quiet, almost muted city of Senterville in America, but nothing is going well. The moon in recent days is very bright and has fallen low inexplicably. The hours of the day get confused, the sunlight disappears, and the animals behave strangely. Journalistic responses are alarming, and scientists wonder. But no one can foresee the curse that will come upon this small town soon. The dead do not die. They become bloodthirsty zombies and rise from their graves to viciously attack the living and eat them. Residents of the provincial town have to fight for their survival.
Of course we are in the movie universe of screenwriter and director Jim Jarmus (Dead, Crushed Flowers, Only Lovers Remain Alive), so the end of the world is more … cool than ever. The usual suspects of the incomprehensible rock ‘n’ roll director’s cinema (Murray, Swindon, Driver, Iggy Pop, RZA, Weitz, etc.) give a thunderous presence, along with new additions to the company (Gomez, Glover, etc.). in an extremely funny, self-referential, cynical, unpredictable, melancholy and … cool look at the “unbelievable” zombie mythology.
The patriarch of independent American cinema returns with his characteristic minimalist style, and signs an anarchist comedy of adult horror. Behind the dead carnivores, the despair of evil and the country ballad of history-dictating titles, lies a sweet and bitter comment that says a lot about modern America, and not only.
The film The Dead Do Not Die was the official launch of this year’s 72nd International Cannes Film Festival.
