A date for your diary or calendar (or in my case, both!!), KATs will be holding the first winter book sale on Sunday 31st October, at the usual venue – Jerry’s Elliniko restaurant, in Katelios, starting at 11am.
It will be Sheila’s last event, prior to her and Roger returning permanently to the UK and so I’m sure many of you will want to come and say goodbye to them.
Sheila has been part of the KATs team since its inception in 2003 and was a longstanding friend of our founder, Pat Dolman and husband, Dave. Sheila has been a major figure of the fundraising team for the south of the island for many years, including her and I setting up the Big Spring Bazaar and the first ever charity shop in Skala, where we raised over €5,000 each winter/spring in the early years.
From there, with help from Sharon at Aliti’s Bar, we began the winter book sales, which morphed into the hugely popular sales and social event we have now, thanks to Jerry and Maaike in allowing us to take over their restaurant every fortnight.
Mention the word ‘Raffle’ and Sheila is out there, sweet-talking and cajoling taverna owners and businesses to donate – not that it takes much, as most are very supportive of our work. So, watch out, we’ll be looking for someone else to take over the raffle ticket books and prizes!
Sheila, together with Roger and latterly Izzy, have been instrumental in neutering, winter feeding & keeping an eye on the welfare of our local strays for many years and often thanks to their intervention, many have survived to live a good life. On Christmas Day, Roger and Sheila give all the cats on their feeding round a Christmas present – some wet food with a worming tablet inside and a flea/tick spot-on, all funded by themselves. This last winter she and Izzy managed to TNR (trap, neuter and return) approximately 100 cats in our region, in fact I’m sure Sheila’s car could automatically drive itself to Amanda, the vet, with all the trips she made over the years!! The trap cage will be handed over to Izzy, to continue Sheila’s successful record of neutering – no pressure there then Izzy!!
With Sheila leaving and me taking more of a back seat, we are very pleased to announce that future KATs (south) events, will now be in the very capable hands of Lesley Archer and Anita Maher and we are looking forward to some fresh and interesting fundraising ideas. Thanks ladies, for stepping up and taking over the organisation of our events, we look forward to working with you.
