5.8 magnitude earthquake shakes southern Mediterranean (epicentre at sea)

Very strong earthquake of magnitude 5.9 on the Richter scale occurred in the morning in the sea area south of Pylos, in the Mediterranean Sea.

According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the quake occurred at 02:43 on Thursday morning, with the epicenter being located in a sea area 240 km southwest of Methoni, in the Mediterranean Sea.

The quake had a focal depth of 39.4 kilometers, according to the Institute of the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), which was reported by the international news agency Reuters. The quake was initially measured at 6.2 on the Richter scale. , but downgraded to 5.8 Richter.
