Air pollution monitoring in Kefalonia following fire at landfill site

From the first moment of the fire at the landfill, the Regional Authority pointed out the urgent need to take measures to protect public health, because the dangerous quantities of harmful chemicals produced during the incineration of waste (the most dangerous are the dioxins) pass through the body. of food and minimally through inhalation and ingestion of dust and do not penetrate the skin.

For this reason, there was a continuous telephone communication of the Deputy Regional Minister of Environment, Energy and Spatial Planning, first with the Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development of the National Observatory of Athens, and then with the National Center for Natural Sciences Research. measures to protect public health from hazardous pollutants due to fire.

It was also agreed with the Ionian Islands Region to repeat the checks and measurements at regular intervals. For the agricultural and livestock sector in collaboration with the Deputy Regional Minister of Agricultural Economy and Rural Development Sotiris Kouris in the coming months will be inspections in the livestock sector and the first oil production period to address any contamination of plants and animals.

In collaboration with the Deputy Regional Governor of Kefallinia and Ithaca, Stavros Travlos, the public will be regularly informed about the prevention and protection measures.
