Bad weather – “Athina” hit Corfu, Zakynthos and Epirus – Where will it “hit” today

From the west, the country has initially been “hit” by the bad weather “Athina” which continues its invasion. Corfu, Paxos, Zakynthos and Epirus were in her sights.

In Corfu

Main roads were turned into “rivers”, yards of houses were flooded, while problems were also noted in the provincial network in Corfu. According to kerkyrasimera, after heavy rains and strong winds on the island, the Operations Center of the Fire Brigade received 130 calls, while actions were taken in 37 cases mainly for tree felling, water pumping and removal of objects.

Specifically:

  • 20 for fallen trees
  • 12 for water pumps and
  • 5 for object removals

Basements of banks were flooded in Solaris, as a result of which the Fire Service intervened. The winds took and “lifted” the Lifeguard Tower on the beach of Ipsos. In fact, it fell on a car causing damage.

At least four flights were canceled due to low visibility, and there were power outages. There was a rock fall on the road to Trumpet. The rock fell on a car without fortunately the driver being injured.

The Fire Service and the crews of the Municipality and the Region were on alert all night. We had heavy rains in Paxos, without fortunately creating big problems.

In Zakynthos

According to zantetimes.gr, a landslide with stones, mud and debris took place after Neratzoules, in the area that burned in the summer about 1 km before the landfill. The materials were swept away on the entire municipal road, as a result of which the road was closed and there was a risk of a road accident. The road was cleaned with machines of the Civil Protection of Zakynthos.

More than 120 mm of rain in 18 hours in Corfu and Epirus

According to Meteo, locally heavy rains and thunderstorms occurred until the afternoon of Thursday, October 7, mainly in the western and northwestern parts of the country. Until 18:00 in the afternoon, rainfall levels exceeding 120 mm are recorded at the meteorological stations located in Gouvia, Corfu and Theodoriana, Arta.

How will the bad weather move today?

According to the forecast of meteo.gr, there will be significant rainfall in areas of Evia and the Peloponnese that were affected by the recent fires.

The winds will blow with intensities up to 7 Beaufort in the seas.

More specifically, on Friday, October 8, rains and thunderstorms are expected in the Ionian, the mainland, the Sporades, the islands of the North and Northeast Aegean and in the northern parts of the Cyclades. The effects will be locally strong, with the possibility of hail mainly in the west.

In Western Greece, Thessaly and in areas of the prefectures of Magnesia, Larissa, Pieria and Imathia the rains will have an increased duration, while the areas that will receive significant amounts of rain include areas of Evia affected by the recent fires.

The temperature will range, in Western Macedonia from 5 to 16 degrees, in the rest of Northern Greece from 7 to 20, in Epirus from 9 to 23 degrees, in Thessaly from 10 to 22, in the rest of the mainland from 12 to 25 degrees, in the islands of Ionian from 16 to 24 and in the island parts of the Aegean from 13 to 26 degrees, while in Crete the maximum will reach locally at 28-29 degrees Celsius.

The winds will blow in the North Aegean east northeast with intensities up to 7 Beaufort and in the South Aegean from changing directions with intensities up to 5 Beaufort. In the Ionian will prevail southerly winds with intensities of 4-6 Beaufort.

In Attica

In Attica we expect clouds with rain and sporadic thunderstorms from time to time. The winds will blow mainly from the south with intensities up to 5 Beaufort,

The temperature will range from 16 to 21 degrees.

In Thessaloniki

Rains and thunderstorms are expected in Thessaloniki, which mainly in the western part of the prefecture may be strong at times. The winds will blow initially from east directions and from the afternoon north northwest with intensities up to 5 Beaufort.

The temperature in the city of Thessaloniki will range from 14 to 18 degrees.
