Kefalonia 25th January 2019 -Including Weather Warning

Heavy rain all through the night and more to come today. Expect flooding on roads this morning and plenty of debris that has been washed out overnight.

The following was issued by the Greek Civil Protection website.

New evidence for the worsening of the weather with heavy rains and storms, snow and windy winds

 

Athens, 24 January 2019

 

According to the Extraordinary Dangerous Weather Report issued today by the National Meteorological Service (NMH ) on Thursday, January 24, 2019 following the Extraordinary Weather Impact Report issued on Tuesday (22-01-2019), it is noted that :

A] Strong rains and thunderstorms , locally accompanied by hailstorms , will take place tomorrow Friday (25-01-2019) from early hours in Western Greece , the Peloponnese , Eastern Sterea ( including Attica ), Evia and fast Central and Eastern Macedonia , the Thrace , the islands of the North Aegean and the afternoon will be extended to the rest of the island country .

On Saturday (26-01-2019), phenomena will be limited to Central and Eastern Macedonia , Thrace , the islands of the North and East Aegean , the Dodecanese , the Cyclades and Crete and will gradually weaken from the afternoon.

B] Snow in places dense , will mark only during the Paraskefi (25-01-2019) in mountainous and hilly the continent , the West Central and Western Macedonia .

C] stormy southerly winds , their intensity going to 8 and in the Aegean on Friday (25-01-2019) locally the 9 beauforts .

Citizens can be updated daily for the development of exceptional weather events to regular weather reports of CMH and the CMH website at www.emy.gr .

 

The Civil Protection General Secretariat ( www.civilprotection.gr of the Ministry of Citizen Protection has informed the relevant state-owned agencies, as well as the regions and municipalities of the country, that they are in a high degree of civil protection readiness to deal directly the effects of the manifestation of intense weather phenomena .

 

At the same time, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection recommends that citizens be particularly cautious, taking care to take self-protection measures against the dangers of the phenomenon of severe weather .

 

In particular, in areas where heavy rainfall, storms or windy winds are expected to occur :

  • Insure objects that, if overcome by intense weather, may cause disasters or injuries.
  • Ensure that the slopes and gutters of the dwellings are not clogged and operate normally.
  • Avoid crossing torrents and streams, walking or driving, during storms and rains, but also for several hours after the end of their event 
  • Avoid outdoor activities and activities in marine and coastal areas during the manifestation of intense weather phenomena.
  • Protect immediately during hail. Take refuge in a building or in a car and not leave the safe place unless they are sure that the storm has passed. Hail may also be very dangerous for animals.
  • Avoid passing under large trees, under hanging signs and generally from areas where light objects (eg pots, broken glass, etc.) can peel off and fall into the ground (eg under balconies) .
  • Follow faithfully the instructions of local authorities such as Traffic Police,

 

Also in areas where snow and ice are expected :

If you are going to drive by car :

  • Be informed about the weather and the state of the road network
  • Have anti-slip chains in their vehicle and the fuel tank full of fuel
  • To travel, if necessary, preferably during the day preferring the main roads
  • To inform their family about the route they are going to follow
  • Change the schedule of their movements to avoid the peak of weather
  • Follow faithfully the instructions of local authorities such as Traffic Police,

If they move around :

  • Dress with lots of layers of light clothes instead of a heavy garment and wear appropriate shoes to avoid injuries due to slipperiness
  • Avoid unnecessary movements at the peak of the phenomena (heavy snowfall, frost conditions)
