Beware of plastic water bottles in the summer: What you should always check!

Most likely, no one has told you so far some details you need to know about plastic bottles and how they can affect your health.

Each bottle must indicate at some point what kind of plastic it is made of. This information is very important, and each type of plastic contains different chemicals that are likely to cause various damage to the human body.

The type of plastics is indicated by letters and numbers, in the form of symbols such as:

Here’s what it all means:

PET is one of the most commonly used plastics in consumer products and is found in most plastic water and soft drink bottles. Intended for single-use plastics. Repeated use increases the risk of developing bacteria. These bottles can release heavy metals and chemicals that affect the body’s hormonal balance. PET plastic is difficult to disinfect and clean properly.

HDPE plastic is the rigid plastic used for milk bottles, detergents and oil bottles. This type of plastic does not release any chemicals at all. Experts recommend choosing these bottles when buying bottled water, because it is probably the safest (and therefore contains the purest water) you can find on the market.

PVC or 3V

PVC is a soft, flexible plastic used to make plastic food wrappers, children’s toys and pets safe. It releases two toxic chemicals that affect the hormones in your body. Experts recommend that you do not buy plastic water bottles with this indicator, if possible.

This plastic cannot be used in the production of bottles, even if it does not release any chemicals in the water. However, it is not a good idea to buy food in such a plastic package. It may not release chemicals into the water, but it does release other very dangerous chemicals.

It is white, or translucent plastic, used as a packaging for syrups and yogurt cups. Plastic polypropylene is hard and light and has excellent thermal resistance properties. When heated, it does not melt. It is therefore relatively safe for water bottles.

Polystyrene is a cheap, lightweight plastic with a wide variety of uses. Used in disposable plastic cups made of styrofoam, egg cartons and plastic cutlery. It releases some carcinogens when heated. It is completely unsuitable for long-term use as a food or beverage container.

PC or non-marked plastic

It is often used for bottles of energy drinks and food packaging. This is the most dangerous plastic you will come across. This category includes polycarbonate (PC) and “other” plastics. This means that the protocols for reusing and recycling these plastics are not standardized. The main concern with these plastics is the possibility of chemical leaching in the food and beverages they contain, when, among other things, they consist of the chemical BPA (bisphenol A).
