The Managing Authority of Ainos National Park in the context of the implementation of Subproject (2) entitled: “Recording of Olive and Olive Trees of Kefalonia-Ithaca Natura 2000 Areas” of the Act entitled: “VIO_MINES, Oil Production: Dating and Promoting High-Value Ecosystems for the Conservation / Management and Sustainable Development of the Ionian Islands’ Integrated into the Ionian Islands Operational Program 2014-2020 calls on citizens of Kefalonia & Ithaca s bodies to assist with information on registration and promotion effort centenarian olive groves and the two islands.

The centuries-old olive groves (including olive trees with a perimeter of more than 5 m) of Kefalonia and Ithaca are ecosystems of high natural value, invaluable source of biodiversity and linked to natural and cultural heritage. In Kefalonia and Ithaca, there are olive groves that hide the history and culture of the place. Today, centuries-old olive groves, especially these natural and cultural monuments, are threatened by:

• Urbanization and land use changes (eradication of monumental olive trees, reduction of biodiversity).
• Limited knowledge of their environmental and cultural value.
• Lack of strategic planning, management and promotion.

The Subproject implemented by the Agency in the framework of the BIO-MENIMES Act aims at highlighting and protecting the monuments of olive groves and the landscape of Kefalonia and Ithaca, sustainable development and enhancing the income of the island’s rural population. The implementation of the subproject will have a positive impact not only on the incomes of the farmers but also on the image of the islands, enhancing the environmental and ecotouristic dimension of the whole Region and contributing to its upgrading as a special / quality destination, while at the same time extending the tourist season. . Direct beneficiaries will be the islanders, and especially the young people, who will have the opportunity to work in new areas, combining sustainable tourism with primary production. The Act by the Managing Authority of Aenos National Park in the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca in collaboration with the Departments of the Ionian University (Environment, Food Science and Technology and Information Technology) in the islands of Zakynthos, Lefkada and Corfu. Some of its Actions require collaboration with other Higher Education and Research Institutions (such as C14 Radiology of Centuries-old Olive Trees), but also with NFEF Kefalonia & Ithaca and schools for the implementation of environmental programs. and school activities.
