Civil Protection of the Municipality of Sami: Prevention for snow and frost

According to the Extraordinary Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena issued by the National Meteorological Service (EMY) , successive weather systems are forecast to cause bad weather under the name “ELPIS” (“ELPIS”) in our country in the coming days. The first weather system will affect us from Saturday (22/1/2022) and the second, which will be more powerful, from Monday (24/1/2022) . The main features will be the very low temperatures, heavy snowfall even in lowland areas.

The Department of Civil Protection of the Municipality of Sami advises the citizens to be especially careful, taking care to take measures of self-protection from dangers arising from the occurrence of severe weather phenomena as described in more detail below:

Snowfall

Prepare

If you live in a mountainous or inaccessible area experiencing problems from snowfall
  • Get heating material and food for several days.
  • Take care of snow removal equipment (eg shovels).

During a snowfall or blizzard

If you are at home
  • Keep warm and stay in it as long as you can.
  • Do not let children go out unaccompanied.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and shoes.
  • Check the water supply network, pipes and the glass of the solar water heater.
If you are in the car
  • Avoid driving in inaccessible mountainous areas.
  • Change course if you are on a difficult road and there is heavy snowfall.
  • Keep safety distances from oncoming vehicles.
  • Stay in the car if it stops.
  • Place a brightly colored cloth on the radio antenna or other visible area for rescue teams to locate you.
  • Turn on the engine for 10 minutes per hour and keep the exhaust clear of snow.
If you are outdoors
  • Go to a safe place without being exposed to the snowstorm.
  • Dress in several layers of light and warm clothing instead of a heavy one and wear warm waterproof boots. Prefer a waterproof outerwear.
  • Watch your movements in areas where snowfall is forecast.
  • Use anti-skid chains if it is absolutely necessary to travel by car. It is best to travel during the day using main roads. Inform your relatives about the route you will follow.
  • Prefer public transport for transportation in the city.

Frost

Prepare

  • In areas where frost has formed, caution is required when driving. Check the condition of the road network and you have anti-skid chains.
  • If you walk, wear appropriate shoes to avoid slippery injuries.
  • In the water supply networks of the houses
  • Find out where the water meter (clock) of your house is located as well as the places where the main and peripheral water switches are located.
  • Check and make sure that the water supply switches open and close and operate smoothly.
  • Make sure that the external pipes (eg solar water heater, balcony taps) are insulated, otherwise make sure they are insulated as soon as possible.
  • Isolate or better drain the mains of the solar water heater, if you are going to be away for a long time during the winter. Adjust the home heating system to operate automatically at low temperatures.
  • Turn off the water supply to the solar water heater and drain the water from the system if you are at home during the frost and especially at night.
  • Do not waste water to remove snow and ice.
  • Limit activities that require increased water consumption (washing machines, etc.).
  • Find out if antifreeze has been installed on the solar water heater by the manufacturer or the installation specialist, in case of a closed circuit. Otherwise, obtain the appropriate antifreeze and take care of its installation.
  • Check for leaks in taps or cisterns.
  • Make sure that the gutters on the balconies and terraces are clean of leaves and debris and work smoothly.

When frost prevails

If the main water pipes are frozen
  • Immediately turn off the main water supply switch of the house and check the water meter. If it continues to operate (“writes”) then there is a leak in the network. Turn off the mains switch and call a plumber.
  • If you decide to defrost the pipes, start from the part of the pipe near the switch so that the temperature change is gradual. If you have no results, contact a plumber.
  • Check that the electrical installations are wet or in danger to isolate them.
