There is intense concern in the government after the recommendations of the experts for the areas of the province that are epidemiologically very dangerous for mass spread of coronavirus and are in danger of being found in situations similar to Thessaloniki.
An alarm has been sounded for Patras , as it is one of the 7 areas that show very high cases in relation to their population. In fact, on Monday, the day of the patron saint of the city of Agios Andreas, fears are expressed for overcrowding and the creation of outbreaks of the coronavirus.
Now, the proposal for a two-speed lockdown has fallen on the table, with the province remaining closed for longer.
Mitsotaki communication with the mayor and the regional governor
Today , Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation with the Mayor of Patras, Konstantinos Peletidis, and the Regional Governor of Western Greece, Nectarios Farmakis.
The Prime Minister stressed the need for strict observance of sanitary measures in view of the feast of the patron saint of Patras, Agios Andreas, on Monday.
He particularly pointed out the fact that lately there has been an increased health burden in the area, a fact that requires even more attention from the citizens and asked the local authorities to contribute to it.
There is also concern for the region of Etoloakarnania. It is indicative that yesterday was the area -after those that are in the “red” – with the largest number of new cases.
The 7 areas of his province are in the “red” – The cases are high
As the government spokesman Stelios Petsas stressed yesterday, a source of intense concern and a key factor for the extension of the lockdown until December 7 are seven areas that show very high cases in relation to their population. These are Thessaloniki, Serres, Patras, Larissa, Magnesia, Etoloakarnania and Lesvos .
Do not make Patras a hotbed of transmission
In fact, Mr. Petsas made a special reference to Patras, in view of the feast of St. Andrew, as there is concern, with the government spokesman appealing for compliance with the measures. He called on the citizens to observe and observe the measures , to avoid synchronicity and to celebrate St. Andrew in their family, not by exchanging visits that are forbidden anyway, in order to avoid the images that unfolded on the feast of St. Demetrius in Thessaloniki with the known results. At the same time, he appealed not to hold another big local celebration.
Vatopoulos: The problem has shifted to the province
The problem has shifted to the province, said Professor Alkiviadis Vatopoulos about the coronavirus. Speaking to SKAI, the professor of Microbiology at the University of West Attica did not rule out the fact that during the gradual lifting of the restrictive measures, some areas may be in lockdown and some may not.
The two-speed lockdown scenario
“The Ro index has started to be below the unit in Athens and maybe Thessaloniki, but it is above 1 in some provincial cities, mainly in Central and Northern Greece. The problem has begun to shift to the province. Residents of a small town or village should not think that the issue does not concern them. It is extremely easy for an area that has not had cases to suddenly get it. “One scenario that can apply is to have lockdowns in some areas and not in others,” he said.
As noted by the Committee of Infectious Diseases, the aim is to December 7, when the market will begin to open, is to have the cases reduced to three digits. “If the measures are observed and the contacts between the people are reduced, logically the cases will be reduced as well. “I just am not sure that quarantine in Athens and Thessaloniki is applied in small cities as well,” said the professor of Microbiology.
