Summer is just around the corner, but the coronavirus is still here and scientists are preparing citizens on how the sea, pool and hotel vacations will be this year.

Citizens, who have largely adhered to precautionary measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus, appear to need to change their habits in the summer to shield their health and protect their own people from the coronavirus. This summer everything will be different. The swimming in the sea, sunbathing on the beaches, the operation of air conditioners at work and at home, the walks in the beach bars, but also the accommodation in the hotels. Experts now have some detail – based on research and studies – are trying to guide citizens to be protected from the virus.

How does the coronavirus react with the sun?
Researchers in the US government have concluded that the SARS-CoV-2 virus loses its potency when temperatures and humidity increase, especially when exposed to sunlight. This was stated by William Brian, the debt officer in charge of the Science and Technology Service of the US Department of Homeland Security.

“Our most important finding so far is the strong influence that sunlight has on the extermination of the virus, both on surfaces and in the atmosphere,” Brain said. “We noticed a similar result with both temperature and humidity. An increase in temperature or humidity, or both, is generally not conducive to the virus, “he said, noting the preliminary findings of the study.

These findings reinforce hopes that the coronavirus will mimic the behavior of other respiratory diseases, such as the flu, which is generally less contagious when the temperature rises. However, the SARS-CoV-2 has been shown to be deadly in warmer places such as Singapore, raising questions about its role in climate change.

How to swim in the sea
GRTimes.gr spoke with Pavlos Nikolaidis, an emeritus professor of Pathology-Infectious Diseases at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a specialist in infections, who said that swimming in seawater or a swimming pool that is chlorinated is safe. Neither has it been found, nor can it be theoretically said that there is a potential risk. The problem is focused on the process, not the pool and the sea. So the problem is the beaches and the sunbeds. Indicative of the example given by the professor are the possible conditions of synchronization, that is, if there are 20 sunbeds in 10 square meters, then the risk is increased by the overcrowding.

At the same time, he added that the problem is congestion during the journey to the beach, as for example it can occur on public transport. During our stay there, the distance of two meters between people should be observed, which can be done as we have “endless” beaches and adds “in essence everything is summarized in individual hygiene and we must continue to follow preventive measures. for the crown “.

Nikolaos Sypsas, an infectious disease specialist, professor at the Medical School of EKPA and a member of the committee of experts of the Ministry of Health, has the same opinion about the summer and the measures on the beaches. Indicatively, in recent statements he stated that rules such as keeping distances even on the beaches will continue, while he said that the relaxation of the measures is something that will be considered in May, although if our country will continue to have the same good image. . “The truth is that we are doing very well, but before we close the first chapter, the first wave, we must still pay attention to the three days of May Day. From there, we successfully close the first chapter. Then we will move on to the second chapter, which will not be a road race but a marathon.

With face masks on beaches and beach bars?
At the same time, Professor Nikolaidis emphasizes that “there will be step-by-step measures for health stores, summer shops such as beach bars, etc. Appropriate distances between customers should be observed and they should not be “crowded with each other”.
When asked about the use of a mask and whether we should use it even on the beach, Professor Pavlos Nikolaidis claims that “it would be good to have it with us and use it in places where there is congestion. You don’t need it outdoors, let alone on the beach. ”

The Tsiodra recommendations for air conditioners
With the temperature slowly rising, the use of air conditioning is expected to begin both at work and at home, but even in restaurants, cafes, shops – when they reopen. However, with the use of air conditioning there is a risk of spreading the corona. Sotiris Tsiodras had recently mentioned this issue, calling on them not to use air conditioners in recycling, noting that he prefers the open window and the good ventilation of the room.

“We prefer open windows to refresh the air, from air conditioners, especially when there is a patient at home.” As he said, “we are following developments and yes, it may mean that the less used the better,” especially if there has been a positive case of corona in the area. Mr. Tsiodras announced that scientific teams in Greece are studying the corona-air conditioner relationship and have found, as he stated, that in some air conditioners traces were found when there was a positive case.

The use of the face mask indoors
In closed places where there may be frequent traffic, such as shops, the use of the mask is appropriate, since it aims not only not to come into contact with droplets but also not to inhale the air of air conditioners. The statements of the pulmonologist-intensive care specialist Panagiotis Behrakis are also indicative: “The air droplets emitted by the man who is the carrier of the corona are suspended much longer when there is any presence in the air inside the space where they were produced. If a turbulent stream of air is present where someone has exhaled or coughed up with droplets carrying the corona, it has been shown that they will float longer. So they will increase the risk of inhalation by a healthy person who is at risk of getting sick.

Holidays and tourism in Greece
Although they seem stormy, for now the waters in which the tourist season will move in Greece remain uncharted , since one after the other the governments of the European states make it clear that the pandemic of the corona does not leave – at least for the time being – margins for a vacation abroad this summer.

Indicative are the statements made by the French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, who recently stressed that it is not possible for the French to travel abroad this summer. “Can we book our vacation this summer? I’m afraid it won’t be wise to count on vacations abroad. Because I’m not sure that air travel will be restored. ”

Certainly the possibility of holidays abroad for the Germans as well, with the German Foreign Minister, Haiko Maas, commenting “not to have high hopes” for trips abroad in the near future.

British Transport Minister Grant Sapes also expressed his displeasure over the holiday abroad, stressing that he would not make reservations for this summer’s holiday: “I would not make a reservation for this summer’s holiday, let’s leave it at that. time”.

On the other hand, the German newspaper Bild proposes Greece as a destination for summer vacations in 2020. In its tribute it talks about a limited number of countries that are considered not to be at risk from the coronaire, referring, apart from Greece, to Croatia, Austria and Switzerland.

Although summer has not yet arrived and all research on coronary behavior in the heat is underway, citizens need to be very careful and adapt to a different daily routine, which will be based on good personal hygiene.
