Coronavirus – African mutation: Graph showing dispersal velocity relative to Delta and Beta strains

“Let’s not panic, but this new variant of the coronavirus looks scary.” With this caption, a former Financial Times reporter “dresses” a graphic he posted on Twitter and shows how much more contagious the African mutation is, compared to Delta and Beta.

The B.1.1.529 strain is said to “bypass” the organization’s defence and the already confirmed cases amount to 59 in South Africa, Hong Kong and Botswana , while ten were isolated yesterday.

This mutation also has 32 mutations, while the Delta strain has about 16 mutations, which were covered by the vaccines. As the FT points out, “it seems to be spreading much faster than the other mutations.”
