Coronavirus: On alert for 6,000 British arrivals – Ongoing checks

Today is a crucial day for the decisions that the government is expected to take on whether the border with Britain will remain open, as 6,000 Britons are expected in the country, who will pass a coronavirus test .

The test results will be the ones that will decide whether the border with Britain will remain open or closed. Based on the planning of the Authorities, almost all the tourists who arrive in Greece will be checked and depending on the cases that will be identified, the corresponding decisions will be taken. If the number of those who test positive is low, then the borders will remain open and epidemiological surveillance checks will continue. Otherwise the scenario is likely to be closed again, as preventing the spread of coronavirus outbreaks is more important than the economic breath that tourism seeks.

Theocharis: Targeted measures if needed
The Minister of Tourism Haris Theocharis spoke to the British Sky News about the “opening” of Greece to tourists and flights from Britain .

Expect the same sense of hospitality. We always enjoy the company of our friends from the UK and we are very happy that our health experts have agreed and allowed us to reopen the connection with the UK. We are also grateful that the British government put Greece on the list of countries where one can travel for holidays “.

“We have been opening the connections since July 1 and we are monitoring the situation. It is currently stable. We monitor the numbers and the procedures we apply and we are very satisfied with the results. This does not mean that we are not vigilant. It does not mean that we are not still monitoring the situation. If necessary, we will take targeted measures. I read some posts that talk about a possible imposition of a general quarantine (lockdown). This is definitely not the case. We would like to deny it. “Greece has opened its gates to foreign tourists – mainly from Europe – and this will continue.”

Extraordinary meeting at the Maximos Palace
Meeting under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos Palace, with the object of intensifying the controls and implementing the existing measures to deal with the coronavirus, will take place today at 16:30.

The meeting will be attended by the Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis, the Minister of Interior Takis Theodorikakos, the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Giannis Plakiotakis, the Minister of State Giorgos Gerapetritis, the Deputy Minister of Development Nikos Papathasias Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias, the Deputy Minister under the Prime Minister in charge of Coordination of Government Affairs Akis Skertsos, the Deputy Minister under the Prime Minister and Government Spokesman Stelios Petsas, the General Secretary of the Prime Minister Panalimas Grigoris and Mr. Grigoris Dimitros the Commander of the National Transparency Authority Angelos Binis, the Chief of the Hellenic Police Michail Karamalakis and the Chief of the Coast Guard Theodoros Kliaris.

Scanning checks at Bulgarian border
New, stricter measures for the arrival of tourists in Promachonas , due to the coronavirus, have been in force since midnight . The government, noting that the number of imported cases increased last week, decided to proceed with more intensive measures at the land border, specifically in Promachonas, where the biggest problem is focused.

Thus, from Promachonas the entrance to Greece is done only for those who have been tested within 72 hours and it is negative. In particular, they must have been diagnosed negative in a laboratory test for coronavirus COVID-19 by the PCR method performed by taking an oral-pharyngeal or nasopharyngeal smear within the last 72 hours before their arrival in Greece. The test must have been carried out by reference laboratories of the country of origin or transit or public or private laboratories of that country, which have been certified by the competent national certification authority of the country.
At the same time they must have a certificate of diagnosis in English, which includes the name and passport number or identity card of the person and which they display at the border post.

It is noted that as it has become known, sanctions will be imposed on those who give false results, as it was observed that experts sell false results to those who want to cross the border.

Greek citizens are excluded from this application of the law, but they were subjected to sampling tests by the EODY ladders upon entering the country.

Wondering how the minister of tourism finds the virus situation in Greece….stable !!!!
110 new cases in the last 24 hours, mr minister of tourism, this is a …stable…growth of the pandemic in the country…
But the minister follows the directions of the tourism operators, especially those of Germany…
Very sad, this government, regardless its good reaction to the pandemic in March, in the last 2 months in the name of a potential €6 billion gross revenue from tourism , it led the country to the second wave of pandemic….is it €6 billion worth the risk ??? Like to hear the minister s answer….do not tell us that the economy cannot be closed ….as it is 2 different things, open to general business and open to tourism….
    Since the equation is simple:

    Tourism=good time=bars, night clubs, stores…= congestion of people !!!
