Two key factors such as the delivery time of the vaccines but also the maintenance of the temperature of the vaccines are the biggest challenge for the scientific staff and those who will generally have a role throughout the company. In fact, the reports describe the time factor for the distribution of vaccines as a “time chain” and the maintenance temperature factor of the vaccines as a “cold chain”. Both … chains are crucial not only for the effectiveness of the vaccine and the health of the recipient but also the conclusion that will be drawn as a result of the vaccination and for this and great importance is given to the strict execution of the protocols.both the time and the cold chain. The details for the distribution company as well as the reference airport that will be at the center of the business are also interesting.
The center of the operation is Tanagra
The information states that the airport that will receive the two planes that will carry the first batch of vaccines will not be Eleftherios Venizelos and Elefsina, but the military airport of Tanagra . The reasons for choosing this airport have to do with its geographical location as it is located in the middle of mainland Greece with direct access to the National Road Athens – Thessaloniki. In addition, it has high safety standards even in the event that civilian or commercial aircraft need to land except, of course, military aircraft. The airport also has storage areas which are being prepared these days to store for as long as necessary the huge cages that will contain the dry ice refrigerators.
Two aircraft flights
It should also be noted that the two life flights that will transport the refrigerators with the vaccines from Brussels to Athens will not be done with C-130 military transporters as originally planned but with commercial aircraft of Greek interests which are in fact expected to be properly configured in refrigerated aircraft and with infrastructure for fast and safe unloading of refrigeration cages and refrigerators.
Plan approved on December 28
According to the latest plan on the table of the company’s executives, the basic fact is that the approval by the European Medicines Agency for the Pfizer vaccine will be given on December 28, 2020. From there on, the countdown will literally begin, as well as the start of the huge business.
The date of the flights
The two flights from Brussels to Greece will take place between 3 and 5 January 2021 and by January 7 the vaccines should reach each of the 1,018 vaccination centers that have been designed and will cover the population throughout its territory. country.
Vaccinations January 11
Until today – December 5 – and given that the vaccine will be approved on December 28, the preferred date for the start of vaccinations in Greece is Monday, January 11, 2021.
At -70 degrees Celsius
The technical specifications and the details of the refrigeration chain are also important. Our country was supplied with 14 refrigerators which is one of the key keys of the refrigeration chain. Each refrigerator resembles the size of ice cream refrigerators in the stands with the only difference that each of these refrigerators can freeze its product at -70 degrees Celsius. In each refrigerator there will be boxes in each of which will hold 975 doses of vaccines . The maintenance of -70 degrees will be monitored by a special system and special personnel that will control the operation of the refrigerators.
The GPS chip in the boxes
Interestingly, in each box there will be a special chip through which Pfizer will check at any time where each box is, if it is inside or outside the refrigerator and if it is open where there will be 975 vaccines inside. The GPS device with thermal sensor is connected and transmits information to a central control panel of the company which will monitor the vaccine distribution network at any time. Thus, Pfizer, through the GPS system is able to know at any time the coordinates of the location of the box with the vaccines, and through the thermosensor if they are in the right temperature conditions for their maintenance.
Note that as soon as a box is opened and it has come out of -70 degrees Celsius, the countdown for its administration will begin, otherwise it will be unsuitable for use and should be discarded. According to the protocol, the vaccines should be stored for a maximum of five days in common refrigerators with a lower storage temperature of -2 degrees Celsius. If five days have elapsed, the dose of the vaccine will be inappropriate and will be destroyed.
Code and AMKA
If for some reason the temperature differs from the permissible limits of -70 degrees Celsius, then the company employees will locate the coordinates of the box and will notify the country or the hospital to which the vaccines have been delivered in order to take specific measures provided in the security protocol.
If the vaccine is deemed inappropriate it should not be used, as it may endanger someone who thinks they have been vaccinated and is safe, and its action may fall below the 95% efficacy recorded in clinical trials. Also, each vaccine will have a code (serial number) which will be identified with the AMKA of the citizen who will be vaccinated so that there is complete control of the dose and the medical history of each patient.
Who will be vaccinated?
The creation of 1,018 vaccination centers throughout Greece is in progress and it is estimated that 2,117,440 citizens will be able to be vaccinated monthly. If our country procures more doses of vaccines, there will be further development of the plan for the creation of additional vaccination centers. Citizens will be able to make an appointment for the vaccination either via sms, online, or by phone through call centers. The health workers will be vaccinated first, followed by the vulnerable groups over 65 or with underlying diseases and then the general population.
