Enhanced police measures for the festive season in Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Lefkada

Intensive police checks to deal with abusive behaviors, protecting commercial activity, preventing traffic accidents and dangerous driving behaviors

The Ionian Islands police service mobilization for the festive season is in full swing.

The planning of the measures is part of a comprehensive action plan developed by the Hellenic Police Headquarters and implemented throughout the territory.

The network of measures designed by the Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Lefkada Police Directorates include the full activation of:

  • prevention of theft and burglary, protection of commercial financial transactions and signs of increased commercial activity
  • enhancing visible policing in crowded islands, direct service to citizens and tackling abusive behaviors that adversely affect commercial activity
  • the prevention of traffic accidents, the handling of dangerous driving behaviors and the overall management of traffic during events.

The Greek Police website provides useful tips on:

  • Preventing traffic accidents

    • Never leave the main entrance open with brackets and take special care if someone is following you inside the building.
    • The main entrance security systems (visual intercom) should allow you to identify and control your visitors
    • Never open the door without making sure you know the visitor.
    • Never leave emergency exit doors open with brackets.
    • Never leave the doors and windows of the balconies unlocked or open.
    • Avoid giving your house keys to third parties. 
    • When you move to change the locks and keys. Do not leave second keys to your home under pots or mats.
    • Never leave large sums of money or valuables in your home and never disclose to your social and business environment the assets held in your home.
    • Garages and storage are a goal.
    • A good solution would be to install an alert-security system in a prominent place, if available.
  • Tips for Users of ATMs

    • Before starting the transaction, carefully check the area around you for suspicious movements.
    • Make sure that the ATM is in the area. there is no accessory, the presence of which is not justified.
    • If you detect any suspicious objects, lesions or marks on the card slot, such as distorted frame, scratches, extras, holes, etc. avoid using this ATM. Notify the Bank immediately.
    • In case the ATM hold the card or encounter any problems during the transaction, only contact the bank that issued the card.
    • Don’t trust strangers who are willing to help you handle the ATM. or request the PIN of your card.
    • In case the machine is damaged, contact only the Bank’s phones.
    • When you enter your PIN code, “protect” the keyboard so that no one around you will notice the four-digit number.
    • After completing the cash withdrawal, measure the money with discretion and as soon as you can.
    • If the transaction is not completed during the cash withdrawal process, check the proof of transaction. If you did not ask for a receipt then re-insert your card into the ATM and check either the balance or the latest transactions on your account. 
    • Be sure not to be on your own if you need to use an ATM. at night and in non-busy areas.
    • If you are planning to take a large amount of money from a bank store it would be good to have a second person.
    • If you use ATM located in a special room, do not allow people you do not know to enter the room during the transaction.
    • Do not leave your keys or valuables in your car while using ATMs. and don’t leave your car engine on.

    To protect your account

    • Avoid using your PIN as your date of birth, phone number or other personal information that can be easily perceived by malicious individuals.
    • Avoid writing your PIN anywhere.
    • Avoid using the same PIN on more than one of your cards.
    • Select and memorize the PIN code that only you know that cannot be identified by your personal items in your wallet or bag.
    • Do not give your PIN to anyone and under any circumstances. If someone, for example, claims to be calling the bank and asking for their PIN number for verification, do not give it. Banks do not follow this practice. If you have a caller ID, record the number on your phone and report it to the Police immediately.
    • Never leave the transaction receipt issued by the ATM.
    • Compare ATM cash receipts with your monthly traffic statement. If you notice any transaction that you have not made, please notify the Bank immediately.
    • Sign your card. This prevents anyone from faking your name on it.
    • Never give or lend to anyone on your card.
    • When you are in circulation you only have the cards you intend to use.
    • Report any theft or loss of card immediately to the Bank and the Police.
