Following our systematic communication and cooperation with a number of Ministries concerning the issues of our islands and in consultation with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis , a government delegation visited Kefalonia on Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 February.

Led by the Deputy Minister despite the Prime Minister for natural disasters Mr. Christos Triantopoulos and the participation of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior Mr. Michalis Stavrianoudakis we had the opportunity to discuss in detail issues related to their portfolios.

Mr. Undersecretary and Mr. General, with officials, met the three Mayors of Kefalonia Mr. Monia , Katsiveli and Michalato successively in Sami, Lixouri and Argostoli and met at various locations in all three municipalities. A meeting was also held with the Deputy Regional Governor Mr. Travlos .

The purpose of the presence of the government was to discuss with the local government all the problems that exist from natural disasters that have affected Kefalonia since 2014. The extraordinary funding of local government by the government exceeds 35 million euros. After the timely restoration of the basic infrastructure, the effort of all the institutions is the absorption of the money and the execution of projects for the effective protection of Kefalonia from future phenomena.

In addition to the restoration and protection projects, investments in infrastructure with a development character for Kefalonia were discussed. For this reason we drove on the provincial road Argostoli-Poros and confirmed the need for holistic intervention on the main road of the island.

The advisor to the Prime Minister, Mr. Thanassis Nezis , was also in Kefalonia for two days . In the context of the meetings with the local self-government, the government unit participated in meetings with the Chamber of Kefalonia-Ithaca, the Administration of the Argostoli Hospital and the DEEP, DIMTO and ONED of the New Democracy of Kefalonia-Ithaca.

The presence of the government level signals the practical interest of the Government and the Prime Minister himself Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the upgrading of the state response in the field of natural disasters. Next week, the visit to Ithaca of the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Mr. Christos Stylianidis and the Deputy Minister Mr. Christos Triantopoulos , will signal exactly the Government’s effort in this field.

I thank Mr. Triantopoulos, Stavrianoudaki and Nezi for the extremely productive cooperation with the local government for the benefit of our islands.
