Ionian Islands Region: Measures to protect public health in Kefalonia from dangerous organic pollutants from the landfill fire || Six basic rules

The reaction of the Regional Governor of Ionian Islands Rodis Kratsa – Tsagaropoulou was immediate , the Deputy Regional Minister of Environment, Energy and Spatial Planning Spyros Ioannou and the Deputy Regional Governor of Kefalonia and Ithaca Stavros Travlos and the cooperation with D. extinguishing the fire and the backfilling to stop the spread of organic pollutants from the air.

The Region pointed to the urgent need to take measures to protect public health, because studies show that hazardous amounts of harmful chemicals produced during the incineration of waste (dioxins are more dangerous) pass into the human body through food and little through respiration and ingestion of dust and do not penetrate the skin.

After consultation of the Deputy Regional Governor Spyros Ioannou with “Demokritos” and specifically the head of the Laboratory of Mass Spectrometry and Analysis of Dioxin NCSR “Demokritos” Leontios Leontiadis, the Municipalities and the citizens are invited to follow the instructions:

  1. Make every effort to extinguish the fire immediately and fill it to stop the spread of organic pollutants from the air.

  1. After the fire was extinguished, the residents of the neighboring areas in the landfill as well as all the areas in which the cloud from the burning was felt to thoroughly wash the exteriors of their homes such as yards, terraces, etc.

  1. Plant-based products such as fruits, vegetables, fruits and vegetables do not absorb organic pollutants but they settle on their surface. Thorough washing is required before eating vegetables and fruits from the area of ​​the landfill.

  1. To be confined to their herds and fed with animal feed or where it is not possible to remove more than 5 km of sheep and goats and other productive animals that are housed in a perimeter of 5 km from the landfill.

  1. Prohibit the free grazing of domestic poultry and other animals.

  1. Cover any uncovered tanks used for watering settlements or for watering animals.

Then after the fire is extinguished, the Region of the Ionian Islands and the Dioxin Laboratory NCSR “Demokritos” will work together to prepare a study on the burden of dioxins and heavy metals, mainly livestock products and surface water.

Depending on the extent of the charge, a treatment and monitoring plan will be prepared by the Dioxins Laboratory in collaboration with the services of the Region.
