Ionian Islands Regional Governor: Tourism upgrade with health services, modern waste management, infrastructure, civil protection and tourism education

The current issues of the preparation for the safe opening of tourism in Kefalonia, the exploration of the possibilities of development of special forms of tourism as well as the “audio visual”, the tourist education and the support of businesses occupied the working meeting that took place during the two-day visit of the Deputy Minister of Tourism Sofia Zacharaki in Kefalonia who was welcomed by the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou , at the building of the Regional Unit of Kefalonia and Ithaca.

The meeting was attended by Kefalonia and Ithaca MP Panagis Kappatos , who accompanied the Minister on all trips and visits, the Deputy Head of Kefalonia and Ithaca Stavros Travlos , the Deputy Head of the Rural Agricultural Economics & Development Sotiris Kouris , the Deputy Head of Civil Protection Nikos Miliotis , the Mandated Regional Councilor for Interconnection & Communication of the Ionian Islands Dimitris Spanos , the Mayors of Argostoli Theofilos Michalatos , Lixouri George Katsivelis and Sami Gerasimos Monias , the Deputy Mayor of Tourism of the Municipality of Argokostoli Nikos, the head of Public Relations of the Tourism Committee of the Municipality of Argostoli, Marina Vergoti and officials.

Welcoming Sofia Zacharaki to the island, the Regional Governor referred to the comprehensive plan formed and served by the Regional Authority for the tourist upgrade of the Ionian Islands, their competitiveness and promotion as tourist destinations that develop their infrastructure and upgrade their product. supporting entrepreneurs and workers in tourism, by enhancing liquidity and preparing for the proper implementation of hygiene protocols.

Specifically, he referred to the gradual utilization of all the means available for the promotion inside and outside Greece by the NSRF and Public Investments, the creation of DMO (Destination Management Organization) for the targeted and structured policy for all tourist destinations of the Region, cooperation opportunities with tourism operators. In particular, he stressed the importance of the reliability of our tourist destinations due to their secure infrastructure.

I thank the Undersecretary for her special interest and support in difficult times for tourism, protection from the pandemic and the healing of the “wounds” left behind by “IANOS”. The first concern is the treatment of the pandemic, its wounds in society and the healing of the wounds of IANOS. And in these goals we have the undivided interest of the Government. Our struggle is daily to be a safe Region, a tourist destination, “green” health with modernized infrastructure, staffed and strengthened hospitals and Health Centers. Also, the provision of a sense of security for residents and visitors from the domestic market and abroad with extensive interventions of Civil Protection. while he also stressed the need for special care in the tourist promotion of EOT for the islands that were affected by IANO.

The Regional Governor finally discussed with the Deputy Minister of Tourism the need to upgrade the Tourism Schools and especially the immediate coverage of the needs of staff facing the Vocational Training Institute (IEK) of Corfu Tourism Professions, in order to operate without interruption. In addition, they exchanged views on the creation of lifelong tourism education and training programs on all the islands in collaboration with the Ionian University.
