Yesterday a ceremony was led in Lixouri in remembrance of this horrendous act, one of many carried out on the island during the occupation in the Second World war.
Nionios Ratsiatos (Professor of Literature at 43rd Lixouri High School)
Spyros Analytis (22-year-old Kanaris)
Antonis Lixouriotatos (or Kastrinos 35 years old),
Gavrilis Ralatos (supervisor of Livieratei Gymnasium, 60 years old)
and the son of Vassilis Ralatos (25 years old).
It was June 1944 when the Germans sent the five fighters to hang at Lixouri Square.
Today, 75 years later, Lixuri honors his Heroes, as every year.
Initially with a Memorial Commemoration by Fr. Marketos, to Pantokrator, then with a wreath at the Monument, where the PEAA PALLIS was erected, and then with Memorial Service and Trisagio at the 5-Heroes tomb from Agia Theklis, in the area of Ammousa.
In their memory, wreaths were presented by: Aphrodite Theoptettaou MP of Kefalonia, Giorgos Katsivelis Deputy Mayor of Lixouri, Dimitris Marketos President of Likouriou, Socrates Papadatos as representative of the village of Ayia Theklis, Panagis Vlachos for KINAL, Evanthia Lada on behalf of Disabled People Association “Hyperion”.
A relative and villager of the Fighters, as well as the Municipality of Maroulis from Kaminarata, gave flowers.
The Band of Our Philarmonic School played the prayer of the dead and our National Anthem.
Ms. Theoptetto, in her greeting, emphasized that just this year, 75 years after German brutalities, the state claimed German compensation.
Lixouri Palikis Kefalonia. June 1944
Just before hanging it.
It sounds like Spyros analyst 22 years old laughs proudly.
“You will avenge us Greek tyrannate youth. Long live with Niotos, ZITO or EPON, I WANT THE KKE … »
He had previously written a message in the prison area that closed him after his arrest.
“I, the seed, have sinned against tyranny, and it will be the fruit of freedom.”
The history of hanging as Gerasimos Sot reports.
It was June 1944, the day of the Holy Spirit and the churches of Lixouri, that they had laid off, and arrived from Argostoli a Hitlerite cascade led by the one-eyed criminal, Kefalonia’s chief criminal, Spider. The Germans welcomed with a smile treacherous to Lixouri’s beach the traitor of Florias, who had forgotten who his compatriots were.
The German cessation carried with it five fighters from Agia Theklis, who had been imprisoned a month ago in the prison in Argostoli.
The five fighters were captured by the Germans in a blockade that I made at the beginning of May 1944 in the village of Ayia Theklis. According to the testimonies, the Germans brought to the village an Ayatagliasiana, because some killed her husband … The Ayathatilisians, knowing that this would be the case, had most of them resorted to the surrounding hills of the village …
The five who were caught in this block were Nionios Ratsiatos, a lecturer at 43-year-old Lixouri Gymnasium, Spyros Analytis with the nickname Kanaris 22 years old, Antonis Lixouriotatos or Kastrinos 35 years old, Gavrilis Rallatos, 60-year-old Livierateios Gymnasium the son of Vasilis 25 years old.
The Germans carried the prisoners to the Markatos building, and at the same time some Germans from the garrison went to the nearby shops to find chairs and cords.
The Lixurians had eliminated ropes and chairs, knowing what the Germans wanted to do, but the cruel conquerors searched for the material they wanted from the storehouses of the shops.
Under the pressure of the Germans, he had come down to the square enough for the conquerors to show him the hang of the five fighters.
With the crowd gathered around with the guns, the Germans climbed the two planes to the side that is today the Alpha Bank, tied the cables to the branches, prepared the loops, and underneath each one put a coffin.
When everything was ready, they brought the fighters from Markatos with the traitor at their side. At some point a German interpreter went a few steps ahead and read the decision “To death hanging … as responsible for anarcho-communist organizations.”
They command the five fighters to make five steps forward and stand under the loops. With Speller’s slogan, the Germans picked up three of them, Nionios Ratsiatos, Antonis Lixouriototos and Spyros the Analyst, and tried to get the loops to their neck. Spyros Analytis caught the executioner and passed the loop on his own. Inside the bloodless silence that dominated the world, the voice of Spyros analyst 22 years old laughs proudly.
The Germans pulled the coffins and life for the three ended. The executioners took care of seeing old Gavrilis Ralatos his child dying first. It was not enough for him to see, because the rope of the hanging of Vassilis Ralatos had relaxed and life was showing he was looking again to flee. But the order of Commander Spiel, forced a German to catch the cable with the hanging to pull it up. There followed a second hangout, as was the case with the old father Gabriel.
Their burial took place a few meters outside the then Lixouri, in Ammousa, where today their bones are buried in a tomb.
It is touching that in the same place where the five fighters were hanged, the same happened in 1849 with the legendary Pope-Listress Gregory Zapantis Nodaros with his company.
Today, Lixouri Square adorns an elegant monument that was painted by PEAA PALLIS as an eternal memorial to the hung and as a bright lighthouse that will guide the coming generations.
