Kappatos (local MP) – Meeting at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for the acceleration of the restoration works

I met at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport with the Secretary General Mr. Karagiannis and it was agreed to consider the involvement of central services of the Ministry for the faster execution of disaster restoration projects caused by “Ianos” in the prefecture of Kefalonia and Ithaca

Yesterday, Friday, January 8, I met in Athens with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. George Karagiannis . The meeting was also attended by the Director of the office of Mr. Karagiannis, Mr. Stefanos Lekkas .

The object of the meeting was the overview of the actions for the restoration of the disasters in the infrastructures of our prefecture from the Mediterranean cyclone “Ianos” and the planning of the Ministry for the next months in Kefalonia and Ithaca.

Due to the great technical challenges, it was proposed the greater involvement of central services of the Ministry to assist the work of the Region and the Municipalities and to speed up the procedures.

For this reason, next week Mr. Dimitrios Anagnopoulos , Director of the Special Service of Public Works (EYDE) for Construction and Maintenance of Transport Infrastructure, will visit Kefalonia to inspect project sites.

I thank Mr. Karagiannis and Mr. Lekkas, as our discussion was productive and conditions are created for faster preparation of projects necessary for our islands.

Then I was informed about the development of a major public project that will not be executed in our prefecture, but directly concerns our islands. This is the new Patras-Pyrgos highway which will be constructed in a new layout. The good news is the start of the tender process for works on the existing national road Patras-Pyrgos. In addition to improvements in signage and asphalt, traffic separation projects will be carried out with a pioneering method for Greece, with alternating cross-section of 2 + 1 traffic lanes and dividers.

The construction of new highways is making a decisive contribution to improving road safety. It is characteristic that in the period 2010-2019 in Greece the deaths of our fellow citizens from road accidents decreased by 44% and this is the largest reduction in the whole EU.
