Finally last night the conclusion was reached in the local elections in Greece for Municipality Mayors and Regions governors.
In Kefalonia before the process commenced a dramatic and for some controversial decison was made in the fact of a change being made from the existing position where the island had one Mayor based in Argostoli to the present situation where the island has been split into three regions each with its own Mayor empowered to make automonous decisions.
The regions the island has been split into are shown below
The Results last night were as follows
The Mayor of Argostoli region is Theofilos Michalatos (Θεόφιλος Μιχαλατος)
The Mayor of Lixouri region is Lixouri Georgos Katsivelis (Γεωργός Κατσιβελης)
The Mayor of Sami region is Makis Monias (Μάκης Μονιας)
Turn out for the second round voting was low in our region at just under 40% and it should be noted for future elections the voting was tight with the Argostoli Mayor winning by only 162 votes.
It will be interesting to see how these mayors now settle in to managing their regions and consider what decision making processes will be made for common areas of interest on the island e.g. tourism, waste disposal and recycling etc.
Greece is split into thirteen administrative regions and Kefalonia reports into and is governed by the Ionian island Region or Περιφέρεια Ιονίων Νήσων (PIN) along with Corfu, Lefkada, Zakynthos and Ithaca.
The new Governor of the Ionian Island Region is Rodi Kratsa Tsagaropoulou (Ρόδη Κράτσα Τσαγκαροπούλου)
So that’s it for local and regional elections but were now heading into a general election period in Greece so as a heads up the press are already using exit Polls from local elections and if repeated in national elections New Democracy are heading for a resounding victory.
