Kefalonia is almost unharmed by Covid-19 this week as well

For another week our Prefecture remained almost unaffected by Covid-19 disease, as in the period from 13 to 19 December only 2 new cases were reported, resulting in a total of 66. Therefore, according to official data of the National Agency for Public Health, Cephalonia remains the second safest epidemiological region in the country.

From the beginning of the pandemic until today, the confirmed cases of coronavirus in Greece amount to 130,485. Unfortunately, 4,102 of our fellow citizens have ended up, ie 3.1% of the sick, with a median age of 79 years. However, 95.7% of them already had an underlying disease and / or age over 70 years. Finally, there are 534 intubated patients in the Intensive Care Units, 43 less than last Saturday.

Especially in Cephalonia, 66 cases have been officially confirmed, ranking it in absolute numbers in the penultimate position among the Prefectures of the country, just behind our neighboring Lefkada which shows 49 cases, with a much smaller but total population. Regarding the cases per 100,000 inhabitants which are the most indicative element for the calculation of the epidemiological burden of an area, in the last place remains the Prefecture of Lassithi with 139 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The Prefecture of Kefallinia is still in the penultimate position with 169 cases per 100,000 inhabitants or one per 602.4, followed by Zakynthos and Laconia which both show 206 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and Lefkada with 207. On the contrary,

Until last Saturday, our Prefecture recorded 164 cases per 100,000 inhabitants or one per 610.0. This practically means that the viral load in Cephalonia increased by 1.03% in one week, which is the fifth lowest rate of development between the Prefectures of the country after Thesprotia, Lefkada, Argolis and Fokida.

At the national level, the burden was 5.3% with 1,206 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 1,145 last week. Inductively, the incidence rate on our island is now 7.1 times lower than the national average, when a week ago it was 7.0 times lower and two weeks ago 6.6 times. Finally, at the level of the Ionian Islands Region since the beginning of the pandemic in March, 319 cases per 100,000 inhabitants have been identified with a total of 663 patients of the disease, of which 464 or 70.0% in Corfu.

Let’s hope that the same good image in Cephalonia will be maintained throughout the Christmas week, in order to keep our island healthy and safe. As we have done so far.
