Modernized KTEL: Wi-Fi, “smart” ticket and telematics from NSRF funding

€ 16.2 million will be given to the regions of the country in order to modernize KTEL as part of the NSRF financing action to support bus and coach transport companies for the adoption of systems and the provision of integrated passenger information services and e-tickets “.

According to the decision signed by the Deputy Minister of Economy, Stathis Giannakidis, it will be distributed to the Regions as follows:

East Macedonia and Thrace, Central Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly, Western Greece 7.710.000 euros 
West Macedonia, Ionian Islands, Peloponnese, North Aegean, Crete 5,155,000 euros. 
Attica 235,000 euros 
Sterea Hellas 1,600,000 euros 
South Aegean 1,500,000 euros.

Beneficiaries should submit an investment plan to fund them. Specifically, for proposals concerning urban KTELs with up to 15 buses: up to 140,000 euros and 16 buses up to 330,000 euros. For proposals concerning intercity bus operators with up to 20 buses up to 165,000 euros and up to 21 buses up to 330,000 euros.


The submission of electronic applications will begin on 2 July at the State Aid Information System ( with a deadline of 30 September 2019. The deadline for completion of the funded investments may not exceed 18 months from the date of issue Of the Integration Decision.

Intelligent ticketing, planning and route optimization systems will be developed under the action, depending on the passenger traffic and the response of the vehicles at peak times and according to the actual needs of the passengers. Also, telematics and passenger information systems will be created, as in places of large population concentration, “smart stops” will be placed, which will inform the public about the actual time of arrival of the next bus. They will also support in-vehicle entertainment and information systems, Wi-Fi in vehicles and service and process certification.

Especially with regard to the ticket, each system will issue electronic tickets and will be able to pay with cash or credit / debit cards. 
At the same time, as stated in the relevant invitation, which was posted in “Touggeia”, the content of the information will be upgraded to the passengers as the material published on the Internet will include schedules, routes and stops on digital maps. It is also planned to install software for the correct planning of the routes, on the passenger traffic and the response of the vehicles at peak hours, according to the actual needs of the passengers.
