New challenges and opportunities for waste management in the Ionian Islands || Regional Council Resolution

The will that the issue of solid waste management is primarily a political goal of combining best solutions, resource management, selection and implementation of effective practices in both technology and management was expressed by a majority of the Ionian Islands Regional Council held in Saturday 05 September 2020 with a video conference through the service e: Presence.gov.gr.

The Regional Authority considers that the self-governing responsibility with the participation of the private initiative in the management of critical issues for the quality of life of the citizen and the protection of the environment, is a practice with positive and immediate results, as applied in the advanced world.

The Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa – Tsagaropoulou and the Deputy Regional Minister of Environment, Energy and Spatial Planning Spyros Ioannou referred to the new framework for the implementation of the European directives to be brought by the new ECHR (National Waste Management Planning) and to the framework of will do what is possible and what is best for our islands in both the management and the restoration of the environment.

The Resolution adopted by the Regional Authority in the context of the discussion of the topic of “Waste Management in the Ionian Islands” by the “People’s Rally”, states the following:

  • The Regional Council considers that the issue of solid waste management is both political and technical and is primarily a political goal of combining best solutions, resource management and selection as well as the implementation of effective practices in both the field of technology and management.

  • He considers that the self-government responsibility with the participation of the private initiative in the management of critical issues for the quality of life of the citizen and the protection of the environment, is a practice with positive and immediate results, applied all over the developed world. The increased cost of services is rather characteristic of the slow-moving public sector and less of the free competition and for this reason in our country, and especially in the field of solid waste management, the public-private partnership and less privatization are applied.

  • Regarding the issues of waste management in the Ionian Islands, within the responsibilities of the new Regional Interdisciplinary FODSA of the Ionian Islands, we will do what is possible and what is best for our islands in both the management and the restoration of the environment, to achieve our national objectives for recycling by sorting at source as the basis of modern management.

  • In addition, we expect that, but we will also seek, with the adaptation at Regional level of the new National Waste Management Plan, to launch policies for further reduction and utilization of landfills in all the Ionian islands, so that the Solid Waste Management Units be sustainable and environmentally sustainable.

  • We consider that waste sorting, alternative management, mechanical collection equipment, green spots, etc. are elements that complement an Integrated Solid Waste Management, but in no case, and in no part of the world, are they alone their solution without modern processing, recovery, utilization units and landfills for treatment waste.

  • Finally, to meet the needs of equipment and infrastructure in waste management we intend to use in the best possible way and with accurate schedules the new program “Antonis Tritsis”, which announced the Ministry of Interior and promotes to Regions and Municipalities, having resources 2.5 billion euros to the Local Government.
