Rebuild the Parthenon! The historical decision of the CCA that reforms the temple

The decision to partially rebuild Parthenon took on the substance of the CCP, at a meeting marked as “very important”.

That’s why, as pointed out, an effort that has been in place for more than three decades has come to fruition. It is the restoration of the north wall of the Parthenon crest.

In the ancient Greek temples, the saint was called the main inner space where the statue of the god (or the goddess) to which he was dedicated was kept. In the case of the Parthenon, in this part was preserved the famous chryselephantine statue of Athena Parthenos, which was made by Phideas and had colossal dimensions.

“Today’s meeting is of great importance because, through the implementation of the researches concerning the restoration of the cella, we will have reconstruction of the facades, a very important event for the later history of the Parthenon”, was noted by the responsible Department of Restoration of Ancient Monuments.

What will the work contribute to?

This means that after the completion of the project (that is, when the two long sides of the cella are restored, ie the north and the south), the geometry of the building will be largely restored, “the identity and history of the monument, while the average visitor will have an understanding of his particular architecture, “ as said by a CSS member. “The study attempts to restore a number of down-to-earth stones, about 250, and possibly the proposal that will be adopted to have an impact on the restoration of monuments in the country,” the department said.

It is also noteworthy that the proposal on which this study is based bears the signature of the late Charalambos Bouras, architect and former chairman of the Acropolis Monument Conservation Committee (ESMA), with a tremendous work on the restoration of monuments, especially the Acropolis.

“It is a very important step for the Acropolis and especially for the topmost Parthenon monument,” said Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture and Sports Maria Andreadaki Vlazaki, referring to the study that “has seriously dealt with the Acropolis Monument Conservation Service, but of course it also has the directions of the ESMA “. As for the fact that the proposal was based on the suggestion of Charalambos Bouras, Mrs. Vlazaki noted: “It is like having him close to us.”

Based on the study

The study, which was unanimously approved by the CAC (apart from a section where two members voted), intends to exploit the rich material and the vast knowledge gathered over nearly four decades, starting with the 1983 monumental volume for the restoration of the Parthenon by Ch. Boura and M. Korres.

Its aim is to highlight the wall retaining limit as it was formed after the bombing of Morozini in 1687 and before the siege of the Acropolis in 1822 when the Turks broke the ancient stones to remove the pencil. “The portion that was maintained until 1822 intact, dissolved within a month to obtain the lead, and the stones were left there. No one wanted the stones, lead wanted, “said the current president of ESMA, Professor Manolis Korres, the man who has been linked as few as the restoration works on the Acropolis.

” The Turks severely destroyed 500 stones . Five hundred heavy “wounded” left behind because they were hasty. They could have destroyed 50 and the 450 were ‘healthy’, she said.

How will the restoration work?

According to the proposal, the ancient stone blocks to be repositioned are 360 and the new ones (from marble from Dionysus, which is very similar to the Pentelic) about 90 . The restoration of both long walls of the cella (the north and the south) is estimated to be completed in about 15 years. In the western part of the northern loop, which will be filled mainly with authentic material, the height of the restoration will not exceed the 6th block (ie a total of about 4.5 m), while the eastern part will reach about 10 m.

In the next phase, when the rehabilitation will include the section where the frieze and the architrave (which were destroyed during Elgin’s seizure and the siege of 1822) will be about 13 meters. The two minorities, which concerned the internal side of this western section (the northern clan always), called for further static exploration to make the least possible completion with new material.
