World day of monuments and places day
18 April each year has been designated by UNESCO and the International Day for Monuments and Sites.

This anniversary aims to raise awareness on the important issue of heritage protection. For this purpose, all kinds of events are organized around the world, seeking not only to make the importance of monuments of each country and their problems known to the general public, but also to promote the case of protection and their inclusion in the modern day social, cultural and economic life.

′′ SAMI KEFALONIA – A CITY A HISTORY ′′
Sami has a long history that starts from archaic times.
Since the prehistoric period (3000-1100 e.g.) Sami plays an important role, culminating in the campaign against Troy. The toponym Sami has since been mentioned the same to date.
During the historical period, especially from 1100 e.g. to the 4th century AD, Sami acquires a primary role. Its territory includes a large part of the current province, whose limits were most likely formed during the Mycenaean period (1500-1100 e.g.).
During the Classic era (500 p. x.- 189 e.g.) referred to by Thucydides as one of the 4 cities state (Wrestling, Pronoi, Helmets, Sami) of Kefalonia and perhaps the most important of all.
The administrative, military and urban center was the dilophisticated acropolis, located east of today’s settlement and was protected with imposing walls (3.400 m. ), which are saved throughout and at a great height. During the same period, both Sami and the rest of the cities cut coins, are autonomous and pursued by their independent foreign policy. Temples, sacred, public and private buildings were labeled or excavated throughout its area.
Its natural harbor has always been an important crossroad for communication between Greece and the West and at the same time a commercial, cultural and artistic exchange center.
The current geographical location of its port, on the road between Italy and Greece, was also noticed by the Romans, who included its conquest in their immediate priorities.
Sami was the only city among the others (Helmets, Wrestling, Prognos) in Kefalonia to resist the Romans and which was occupied after a four-month siege in 189/188 e.g.
From this period (despite the looting, destruction and extortion of its inhabitants, which occurred after occupation) to the old Christian (4th AD. ) emerges in the first city of Kefalonia and becomes a seafarer of Roman naval forces.
Its port extends with the construction of an external port arm, surrounding the port of Classical times, whose remains are still distinguished today at the bottom, in the position of Loutro. Imposing buildings of public nature, aqueduct, water supply and sewer system, luxury houses and villas are the irrefutable witnesses of this period. Outside of all the above memorials, rare artistic treasures of the visual arts came to light, proving the high sensory of residents.
At the same time, Sami highlighted important spiritual forms. A typical example is mentioned by the Gnostic philosopher Epiphanis, whose teaching and worship was established (2th AD). ).
