Spanish and Italian crews awarded for fire fighting efforts in Evia

Today, August 17, 2019, the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Mr. Nikos Chardalias, awarded the crews of the Italian and Spanish aircraft involved in the difficult task of extinguishing the fire in Euboea. The ceremony was held at the premises of the Unified Coordination Center of the Fire Brigade in Chalandri.

The Spanish and Italian Authorities responded immediately to Greece’s request for airmail, through the European Civil Protection Mechanism and in particular through the rescEU program, assisting with two Italian and one CL-415 Spanish aircraft.

In his brief address, the Secretary-General thanked the crews for their significant contribution to extinguishing the fire and for their contribution to the Greek authorities. At the same time, he stressed that this is a tangible indication of common European values ​​such as European Solidarity and the protection of the life and property of European citizens.

The heads of the Italian and Spanish missions, as well as a representative of the European Commission, also gave a brief greeting.

Present at the award were Chief of the Fire Brigade Lieutenant General Vassilios Matthiopoulos , Commander of the Air Support Command (CAA), Deputy Commander Athanasios Savvopoulos , Commander ESKE. Lieutenant General Iakovos Kleftospiros and the Commander of the Air Corps Fire Service (HAEMS) AA Georgios Portozoudis , as well as Civil Protection, Fire and Rescue Officers.
