The Greek has been excellent over the last 12 months, becoming NextGen champion, reaching the Australian Open semi-finals and breaking into the top ten of the world rankings.

But that form and quality was nowhere to be seen on Court 2 as he was dominated by Fabbiano.

The unheralded Italian won the first set 6-4 but Tsitsipas hit back to win the second set 6-3.

Tsitsipas’ momentum was shortlived though as Fabbiano took the third set 6-4.

In the fourth set, Tsitsipas looked to come forward more as he struggled to get first serves in play.

In a dramatic tiebreak, Tsitsipas had two set points to force a decider at 6-4 but missed his chance which gave Fabbiano his first match point.

But Tsitsipas stormed back to take the breaker 10-8 and take the match into a fifth set.

In the deciderer Fabbiano regained his composure to complete a 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-7 6-3 win.
