In the presence of the Prime Minister Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis , the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Karamanlis, the Deputy Minister Mr. Karagiannis, the MPs of Achaia, Ilia, Zakynthos and Kefalonia-Ithaca, as well as institutional and official representatives, of the Patras-Pyrgos highway.
This is a great development project for all of Western Greece, the Peloponnese and the islands of the central Ionian. Thanks to the new road, the main mainland access road to Kefalonia and Ithaca becomes safer and faster. The new road ensures road safety and better everyday life for the citizens. Favors commercial transport and tourism.
On the road from Patras to Kyllini many of our compatriots have lost their lives or have been seriously injured. To understand the importance of the project, the corresponding new Corinth-Patras highway is estimated to have reduced the frequency of fatal accidents by 94%, compared to the old highway.
The project is being implemented after many years of delays, thanks to the great effort of the Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis and successful two-year negotiations with the European Commission, given the disastrous choice of the SYRIZA Government to divide the project into 8 contracts, which were eventually abandoned.
The main part of the project will be completed in a period of 36 to 40 months and creates 3,000 indirect and direct jobs. At the same time, a road safety intervention of 30 million euros is being implemented on the existing Patras-Pyrgos road. Our goal is to complete the new highway with interventions in the provincial road network and the ports of Kefalonia, to secure the financing of which I make efforts in cooperation with all agencies.
