The new weekly epidemiological picture of Kefalonia. What is its position at national and European level?

A new case of Covid-19 disease appeared in our Prefecture between 10 and 16 January. Nevertheless, and always according to the official data of the National Organization of Public Health, Cephalonia from the beginning of the pandemic until today remains the safest epidemiological region of the country.

In our Prefecture in particular, 70 cases have been officially confirmed, ranking it in absolute numbers in the penultimate position among the Prefectures of the country, behind only the smallest population Lefkada that remains at 50. In terms of cases per 100,000 inhabitants, however, which are the most Indicative and critical indicator for calculating the epidemiological burden of an area, Cephalonia is in last place with 179 cases per 100,000 inhabitants or 1 per 558, compared to 177 cases until last week. In the second place passed the Prefecture of Lefkada with 211 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, overtaking the Prefecture of Lassithi with 240 cases. Zakynthos completes the top five with 243 and Evia with 299 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

On the contrary, the most epidemiologically affected areas of Greece remain Pella with 3,063, Drama with 3,034, Thessaloniki with 2,811, Pieria with 2,709 and Kilkis with 2,646 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

In total, the confirmed cases of coronavirus in our country now amount to 148,370. Unfortunately, 5,441 of our fellow citizens have ended up, ie 3.7% of the patients, with their median age at 79 years. Finally, 323 patients are in the Intensive Care Units, 39 less than last Saturday.

A new case in Cephalonia, practically means that our viral load in a period of 7 days increased by 1.1% and corresponds to 0.37 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per day, bringing our Prefecture over Zakynthos with 0.35, Thesprotia with 0.33, Chios with 0.27 and Arta with 0.21 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per day, but also over Grevena, Lefkada and Samos with zero new cases. On the contrary, nationally, the burden was of the order of 2.8% with 1,372 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 1,334 until Saturday, January 9th. In total, the case index on our island is 7.7 times lower than the pan-Hellenic index, compared to 7.5 times in the previous 7 days.

At the level of the Ionian Islands Region since the beginning of the pandemic in March, 348 cases per 100,000 inhabitants have been identified with a total of 723 patients of the disease, of which 504 or 69.7% in Corfu. In fact, according to the report of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published on Thursday, our Region together with Epirus and the South Aegean are now the only “green” areas in the entire European Union.

As far as the development of the “Eleftheria” operation is concerned, 219 vaccinations of citizens corresponding to 0.56% of our population were carried out in our Prefecture until yesterday, compared to 0.73% nationwide with a total of 79,744 vaccinations.

Let’s hope that the positive image will be maintained this week, which is marked by the opening of retail throughout the country, except for the red areas that will operate under the click away regime. We point out, however, that it is still mandatory to send an SMS to 13033 or to use a handwritten movement certificate, consumers must complete their purchases within two hours from the moment of sending and approving their text message, while the well-known limits on the number of customers.
