This is the first smoke free beach in Greece!

The beach of Vagia in Serifos is, starting this summer, the first smoke-free beach of the Cyclades and the whole of Greece. This was announced by the Athanasios K. Laskaridis Public Benefit Foundation and the Municipality of Serifos on the occasion of the World Anti-smoking Day on May 31st. The action takes place under the SeaChange Greek Islands environmental program, designed and implemented by the Foundation on ten islands of the Cyclades.

Coastal cleansing carried out on the islands that have been part of the program over the last two years have highlighted cigarette smoking as the most common waste and on the other hand the highly aggravated situation in Serifos. On the basis of this and in collaboration with the Municipality of Serifos, under the auspices of which the program is being carried out, the Athanasios Public Benefit Foundation Laskarides starts the pilot action starting with Vagia. Following the corresponding practices implemented in France and Spain, this “behavioral experiment” aims to eliminate coastal smoking alongside the prevention of marine pollution.

What will happen on the beach for smokers

At the beach of Vagia, which is a protected area within the Natura network, there will be a construction for a controlled smoking zone, ashtrays with environmental messages , as well as corresponding information signs. By participating in the “smoke-free” action, the local craftsmen will undertake the creation of the smoking zone, as part of the program to strengthen the local economy and empower people. The finalization of the technical specifications will take place at the meeting of the project team with the Mayor of Serifos Antonios Antonakis and with professionals on the island on Monday, 3 June. It is noted that in order to support the action and inform the visitors, a subsidized job will be created by the Foundation.

Vagia, the first smoking-free beach in the Cyclades

Dr. Aggeliki Kosmopoulou, Executive Director of Athanasios K. Laskaridis Public Benefit Foundation said: “An important element of the SeaChange Greek Islands program is the ability to respond to the data resulting from our work in the field and the contact with the local communities. Cigarette smoke is one of the most frequent pollutants in the Cyclades, and Serifos has shown early that it is particularly burdensome. The goals of trying to make Vagia the first smoking-free beach in the Cyclades is to raise awareness of all of us and to prevent marine pollution at birth. Unlike other marine waste, cigarette butts are not transported to the coast. They are left or “forgotten” there. And we hope that this awareness will help to reduce the phenomenon in other islands as well. “

The Mayor of Serifos, Antonis Antonakis, said: “The two-year collaboration with the Athanasios K. Laskaridis Public Benefit Foundation on our island, Serifos, has led to joint actions. We strongly support this initiative to raise awareness about the protection of the marine environment and promote the Serifos tourism development goal “.
