Sotiris Tsiodras returned to the issue of the use of a mask by the general population. As he said, both the WHO and the European Center for Disease Control reiterated that the general use of masks by the public “is not supported by today’s data”.
As he said, during the established information about the course of the disease, WHO pointed out the risks of transmitting the virus from the wrong use of the mask. There are risks, he said, of becoming infected without wanting to be touched and re-used or to have difficulty breathing.
In addition, he noted that there is a false sense of security that can lead to negligence in the observance of more important measures, such as hand hygiene and distance.
Mass use of masks will lead to diversion of resources from other measures. Finally, Sotiris Tsiodras stressed that the massive use of masks can lead to the diversion of resources from other public health measures such as hand hygiene. So he reiterated that the most important measures are to avoid overcrowding, physical distance of at least 1 meter from other people, frequent hand hygiene with antiseptic or soap and water.
The infectious disease specialist did not rule out the possibility, according to the European Prevention Center, of deciding on the mass use of a mask. The implementation of such a measure will be done depending on the course of the disease in a country or even in special populations. Sotiris Tsiodras added that the final position of the Greek Committee for the Prevention of Coronation will be officially announced on Thursday.
