Weather: We’ll … cough dust and the sun is ignored!

With … special weather, we spend the Holy Week with everyone’s mind on how the weather will be … at the end of it. The temperature will remain high on Wednesday Wednesday, but sun … we will not see. Unbelievable quantities of African powder will cover everything. How does the phenomenon explain, how does it look from space and analytical prognosis for the whole country.

High temperature but with … dust. Unbelievable dust coming from Africa and making the whole country reminded … deserted! The weather gives us unique moments while we are heading for Easter Sunday, but according to meteorologists the weather will probably make us grace to bake traditional sausage without strong weather.

Yet, it is too early to speak with absolute certainty about … the future. This is because the present has in the “menu” the dust that will make our life difficult and the Great Wednesday.

Where does the dust come from?

By using computational tools that take into account atmospheric circulation, it is possible to find sources of origin of dust that affect our country.

In the afternoon of Tuesday 23/04 the high concentration of African dust is located at an altitude of more than 3 km and as shown in the graph below, its sources are located in Libya in areas with alluvial deposits, ie areas with clay soils and fine sand.

The strong winds blowing in Libya over the last 24 hours, due to the combination of low pressures in the Western Mediterranean with high pressures in the Eastern Mediterranean, lead to the bulk of dust and its transfer to our country.

The precipitation of dust in the following hours and muddy phenomena will again reduce the visibility of M. Wednesday 24/04 mainly in southern Greece.

Weather – How dust is moving with image from … space!

In the picture below you can see the great concentration of dust in the Central Mediterranean that moves towards our country on the morning of Tuesday, April 23, 2019. The satellite reception and processing of the image by the National Observatory of Athens / took place at 09:30.

Significant episode of bulk transfer of dust to Holy Week

A significant transfer of African powder is expected during the Holy Week in our country. As shown in the video below, the dust wave will initially affect Western Greece on Tuesday Tuesday, while dust levels near the surface of the soil will be very high in most of the country up to and on Friday.

The episode is due to an extensive field of low pressure in the Western Mediterranean, which, combined with the high pressures in our region, create a strong South Stream in the Central Mediterranean that transfers dust from Africa far north than usual. In the map with shades of brown and red we present the concentration of dust in the atmosphere in the afternoon of Wednesday Wednesday and arrows the direction and speed of the wind at a height of 10 meters. This mass flow will also be responsible for the sensible rise in temperature across the country (see video) although sunshine will be limited due to dust and high clouds.
