Warning Issued by Greek Civil protection for bad weather including Beaufort 10 wind speeds in the Ionian area

Bad weather from Sunday afternoon (24-11-2019) with heavy rain and thunderstorms and stormy south winds

According to the  Extraordinary Dangerous Weather Report  issued  today on Saturday, November 23, 2019  by the  National Weather Service (NMA) ,  bad weather is  forecast  for Sunday afternoon  (24-11-2019) and from the west, which is during  Monday  (25-11-2019) will  affect almost the entire country . Its main features will be  heavy rains  and  thunderstorms  accompanied by  hailstorms  and  stormy south winds .

A. In more detail, heavy rains and thunderstorms will affect:

1.  SUNDAY  (24-11-2019)

By the afternoon the  islands of the Ionian ,  Epirus ,  Western Solidarity , the  Peloponnese and by night the  Eastern Solidarity  (including  Attica ),  Euboea  and possibly Thessaly by night  .

2.  MONDAY  (25-11-2019)

a. By the early hours of the  Ionian Islands , the  Western Solidarity , the  Western Peloponnese  and possibly  Epirus .

b. By noon  Eastern Peloponnese ,  Eastern Central ,  Euboea ,  Crete , Late Afternoon  Thessaly ,  Sporades ,  Cyclades  and by evening  Macedonia  (mainly  Western  and  Central ).

c. Gradually from morning hours the  islands of the North and East Aegean  and the  Dodecanese .

3.  Tuesday  (26-11-2019)

a. In the early morning hours the islands of the  Eastern Aegean  and until noon the  Dodecanese .

b. By noon in  Crete , probably in the  Cyclades  and gradually in the afternoon again in the  Dodecanese .

B.  Especially for Attica, heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected from Sunday evening (24-11-2019) to Monday morning (25-11-2019) .

C.  Very windy south winds of 8 to 9 beaufort  will blow on  Sunday  (24-11-2019)  in the west  and  Monday  (25-11-2019) in the  Aegean . It is likely that the  Ionian  will temporarily reach 10 beaufort  until  Sunday evening (24-11-2019)  .

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection ( www.civilprotection.gr ) of the Ministry of Citizen Protection has informed the relevant state departments involved, as well as the regions and municipalities of the country, to be on high  alert to respond promptly. the effects of severe weather events.

At the same time, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection recommends that citizens be particularly cautious, taking care to  take self-protection measures against the risks arising from severe weather events .

In particular, in areas where  heavy rainfall, thunderstorms or thunderstorms are forecast :

  • Secure objects which, if carried away by severe weather, may cause injury or injury.
  • Ensure that the house’s gutters and gutters are not clogged and functioning properly.
  • Avoid crossing streams and streams, on foot or by car, during thunderstorms and rainfalls, but also for several hours after the end of their event 
  • Avoid rural activities and activities in marine and coastal areas during severe weather events (risk of lightning strikes).
  • Protect immediately during a hail break. Refuge in a building or in a car and leave the safe area only when they are satisfied that the storm has passed. Hail can also be very dangerous for animals.
  • Avoid crossing under large trees, under signboards and generally in areas where light objects (eg pots, broken glass, etc.) can detach and fall to the ground (eg under balconies) .
