Weather: Heavy rain arrives, at risk of flooding – 25s return on Sunday [maps]

The weather will change significantly from the evening hours of Friday and, mainly, on Saturday.

According to the National Observatory of Athens (meteo.gr), a deep barometric low created today, June 5, in Southern Italy is expected to move quickly towards our region and cause a change in the weather in our country, especially on Saturday, June 6.

As early as Friday afternoon, the winds in the Ionian Sea and the South Aegean will gradually strengthen from the south and late at night will locally exceed 8 Beaufort.

Beaufort 8 blowing just east of Kefalonia Friday 5th June (roughly 50MPH)

In particular, for the weather of Northern Crete, meteo.gr points out that the strong winds will lead to a significant rise in temperature that keep the mercury at high levels, up to 30. C in the evening hours of Friday 05/06. On the mainland the temperature will drop in most areas on Saturday 06/06 by about 4-5. C compared to Friday 05/06.

The change in weather will be felt more slowly, tonight. The National Observatory of Athens reports that at that time we expect the first  heavy rains and local storms in the Ionian Islands, which during the night and on Saturday morning 06/06 will extend to the rest of the western and central parts of the country.

Locally the effects will be intense and the risk of flooding will be high. The probability of hail in the lowlands is small, while in the semi-mountainous and mountainous parts we expect small hailstorms.

The areas where intense phenomena are expected:

Kefalonia up to 50mm of rain on Saturday

And African powder on the “menu” as well!
In addition to the rains, the stormy south winds will lead to the transfer of a significant amount of African dust to our country with the largest concentrations occurring in the South Aegean and Crete . On the mainland, there will be occasional mudslides.

BUT Weather: Back to sunny 30s by Sunday in Greece
According to EMY, Sunday ‘s weather will be cloudy in the mainland and the northern Aegean with local rains mainly in the north, where isolated thunderstorms will occur. From Sunday afternoon, however, the weather will start to improve, while the temperature will generally rise slightly.

The map for Sunday weather:

On Holy Spirit Monday , the weather will be generally clear, with occasional clouds in the west, central and north. In the noon and afternoon hours in the central and northern continents there is a possibility of local showers in the northern mountains.
