Weather Problems Overnight Near Patras and Rio Bridge

Huge problems have caused acute weather events in Achaia, Aitoloakarnania and Nafpaktia today. More specifically, in Drepano, Achaia, more than 1,000 people were trapped in a entertainment center, according to the Police, due to the risk of overflowing nearby streams.

Immediately the Fire and Police were mobilized, where, in cooperation with the “Olympia” road, they cut off the bars linking the point to the Corinth – Patras motorway and the cars were channeled to the motorway.

Also, according to the Police, there was a car crash in the Klokovas tunnel, resulting in the mobilization of the Fire Brigade. Normally, the traffic on the “Ionian” road in the stream to Antirrio, the Rio – Antirrio Bridge and the Antirrio – Ioannina National Road, where earlier caused problems due to intense rainfall, is now being conducted.

However, the “Ionian” road remains in the stream from Antirrio to Ioannina up to the height of Gavrolimon Aitoloakarnania due to the accumulation of water.

At this time most problems are recorded in the city of Nafpaktos and in neighboring areas.

According to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, Western Regional District Officer Apostolos Katsifaras, the Fire Brigade has received more than 40 calls for water replies, adding that “firefighters are overcrowded to deal with the problems,” while PPC’s crews are constantly working on restoration of electricity supply.

Regarding the problems that have been created on the Ionian Road, in particular in the Klonov tunnel, the regional governor told EIA – MPA that about eight cars were trapped, but he added, there was an immediate mobilization to unblock them.

At the same time, the regional governor stressed that “due to the heavy rainfall we decided to stop the traffic on the Ionian road to check the tunnels, while we stopped the traffic on the Rio – Antirrio bridge, so that there would be no new enclaves in Aitoloakarnania”.

With regard to the operation that took place in Drepanos, Achaia, to unleash hundreds of people from a fun center due to the risk of overflowing nearby streams, the regional governor told ANA – MPA that a big effort was made by both the Fire Brigade and the Olympia Street all safe.

At the same time, he noted that the rainfall was very intense and lasted for more than three hours, while with regard to the attempts to disengage, he said that with the help of machinery the side bars between the Corinth – Patras motorway and the old highway were opened and so we were able to drive cars .
