Zakynthos will have two permanent fire fighting planes based there this season

Good news from Zakynthos and potentially the wider Ionian islands with two more firefighting planes based in the area, similar to recent years when Kefalonia based planes have supported them, these planes if required could give additional support if required before the Canadairs or similar arrive from the mainland.

Our island is being equipped with two firefighting aircraft, following a request submitted by Zakynthos MP Dionysis Aktypis to the former Secretary General and current Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Mr. N. Hardalias .

The announcement in detail:

The commitment of the former Secretary General and current Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Mr. N. Hardalias, for the deployment of two Petzetel (PZL-Mielec M-18 Dromader) firefighting aircraft exclusively to meet the needs of our island is being implemented.

In a meeting we had on January 17, 2020, I asked Mr. Hardalias for the provision of airspace exclusively for Zakynthos, which will be on constant alert to deal immediately with the risk of fire.

It is extremely important that the Zakynthos Fire Service has at its disposal all the air and ground means in order to ensure the immediate intervention of the fire brigade at the time of the fire. The goal of all of us is for our island to remain green and for human lives not to be endangered.
